September 28–our second day of vacation–was a pretty manageable photo day. We went to a wildlife refuge (my favorite place in the world), where I snapped the best shots of a swan that I’ve ever gotten.

Any new photographer knows the struggle of shooting an all-white or all-black subject, and I haven’t quite mastered the art.

And while I did lose some detail on the body of these swans, I’m still pretty happy with the results. Especially since those close to me have witnessed my struggle to capture the magnificent, but perhaps slightly overrated, Mute Swan.

We didn’t make it to the beach on the second day, but I didn’t mind, because it’s always such fun for me at this refuge. With a salt pond and so many good habitats, you’re always bound to see something cool.

And not just birds, either. I saw this Eastern Painted Turtle and American Bullfrog at one of the small marshy ponds. And I know these are big lily pads, but look at how small that little turtle is! He could’ve fit in the palm of my hand.

Anyways, it’s probably good that I didn’t get overwhelmed by photos on day two, because I was really about to get overloaded on day three.
