It’s molting season. Pretty much every bird I see lately is in the process of replacing their worn-out feathers with a beautiful, shiny, new set before the cold winter months roll around.


Which means that pretty much every bird I see right now looks like garbage. Like they’ve been through a paper shredder, or maybe a cyclone.

I’ve seen Carolina Wrens without tails, Blue Jays with bald heads, and Northern Cardinals with random tufts of feathers sticking out in every direction.


Which makes it really challenging to get a nice photo. So during this difficult time, please enjoy these photos I took last winter when the birds were still pleasant to look at.
