Along the Way

Back in June, my grandparents went on a roadtrip, and I took care of their cats while they were away. Now, it’s common knowledge that one of their cats, Freddie, is in my top ten Favorite PeopleTM, despite the fact that he is most certainly not a person. I hold him in such high regard that he even has a knitting pattern named in his honor. But anyways, this post isn’t about Freddie, so I will continue on.

So twice a day I would walk through my grandparents’ yard, and I was always amazed at just how many House Sparrows can fit on a feeder at once. A few different families were there with their new fledglings, trying their hardest to turn them into adults. I don’t think the babies were partial to that idea, though–there was a lot of screeching and crying going on.

I also spotted this juvenile American Robin along the way (learn more about robins here) who posed for a portrait like a champ. Truly an upstanding young individual.

And then I encountered this dear Eastern Chipmunk. He was on his way back out of a barrel after getting a little drink of thoroughly green algae water, and didn’t seem too pleased to be face to face with me.

And to wrap things up, here are some rabbits I saw as I was heading home. The yard was hopping with them (heh) and they were in every stage of life. Although it’s nearly impossible to tell Eastern Cottontails apart from New England Cottontails without genetic testing, I can always be found trying anyway. And there’s a slight, tiny, minuscule possibility that the rabbit on the left is a New England Cottontail. Although, they do usually stick to brushy areas so perhaps not. I mean, I am mostly basing it off the fact that the eye ring is slightly more orange than cream, so… probably not great logic. Either way though, they’re pretty cute.
